William Powell Frith was a popular and successful Victorian painter. His early talent was nourished by his working-class father, and he was educated at Sass's Art School and the Royal Academy. George Augustus Sala was a journalist, travel writer, and essayist, and had worked as a painter and illustrator before turning to journalism.
