William Powell Frith was a popular and successful Victorian painter. His early talent was nourished by his working-class father, and he was educated at Sass's Art School and the Royal Academy. His early paintings were generally derived from classical or literary themes; in later life, he painted contemporary Victorian compositions that proved to be highly popular, and remain interesting as images of the age. George Augustus Sala was a journalist, travel writer, and essayist, and had worked as a painter and illustrator before turning to journalism.
